Looking at this map of 1877 Brunswick, you can spot familiar places still in use today. The town 'mall' is familar to many. It's the park-like area that runs seemingly along the middle of the street. Visit the mall today in the summer and you'll find musical concerts, the Farmer's Market and some great hot dogs. In the winter the town maintains an ice skating area about the size of a small pond and only a few inches deep. The mall is well visited by the public all year long. On the left of the map below we see a church steeple at the intersection of Pleasant Street and what was called Main Street (now called 'Maine Street'). Today, the church has been converted into a shop but still looks like the map image. If you are from this area, what other constants exist between Brunswick of 1877 and today? Click on the image below to see a much larger and greatly expanded version of this map. ONCE OPENED, USE THE SCROLL BAR to see more. A couple of interesting Brunswick history articles are online. One of these is posted on Ray's Place. It was written in 1876, just a year before the map was published. It's interesting to view the map and read the article together.
